"People feel like they have to go to Chicago, New York, to some place fancy to get cosmetic dentistry and the chances are, the person you are seeing now, is well trained and can probably meet the needs that you want,” says David Weinstein, DDS.
Terri O'Malley took tetracycline as a kid and that damaged her teeth. She wanted a brighter smile. To whiten her teeth, she had six of them bonded.

"Right now they are a little bulkier than my actual teeth. The bonding that is on there is definitely discolored around the edges and certainly on the surface of the tooth,” says O'Malley.
She wasn't happy with the bonding so decided on veneers. They are fine pieces of thin porcelain that are bonded to existing teeth. They are durable, last for several years but can not be used on crowns.
"The biggest concern is sometimes they pop off, in which case you bring it back to the dentist, he edges it and puts it back on for you, fifteen minutes,” says O'Malley.
To get started, she has a full dental exam with x-rays. Her existing bonding has to be removed. Her teeth are slightly reduced in size to make room for the porcelain veneers. Impressions for the new veneers are made and sent to a lab. Until the veneers come back, a temporary bonding is placed back on her teeth. After a few weeks, a second visit and the temporary bonding is taken off, laminates are then bonded in place and cured with a light.
It's been a few weeks. The price tag for the porcelain veneers varies between $600.00 hundred and $1,400 a piece. The results speak for themselves.
"I am smiling a lot more now. I don't feel self conscious now about it or I need to hide my teeth,” O’Malley says, “I just want to show them off to everyone, I think they are great."
